Green Bay Packers Release Trevon Diggs

In a move that feels like it happened before the ink could even dry on his locker nameplate, the Green Bay Packers have cut ties with Cornerback Trevon Diggs. Just three weeks after claiming the former All-Pro off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys, Diggs is back on the market. If you blinked during the Packers’ playoff run, you might have missed him entirely.

Here’s the breakdown: Diggs played exactly two games for Green Bay. He logged a grand total of 34 snaps. And his impact? minimal. He started in the regular-season finale against Minnesota, managed a few tackles, and then played a single defensive snap during the Wild Card loss to the Chicago Bears. That’s a rough stat line for a guy who was leading the league in interceptions just a few years ago.

The Packers took a flyer on Diggs when they were desperate for depth late in the season. But with no guaranteed money left on his massive $97 million contract, cutting him now was a financial no-brainer for Green Bay. They avoid a $14.5 million cap hit for 2026 and walk away having paid him just over $500,000 for his services. Where will he land next?

Diggs’ Rollercoaster Ride

It’s been a dizzying few months for Diggs. Let’s rewind.

  • The Highs: In 2021, Diggs was the talk of the league, snagging 11 interceptions and looking like the next great shutdown corner. He earned Pro Bowl honors and a massive payday.
  • The Lows: Injuries have derailed that momentum. An ACL tear in 2023, followed by knee issues and a concussion this past season with Dallas, severely limited his availability.
  • The Exit: Dallas waived him in late December—a shocker to some, but an inevitability to others watching his declining production and availability.

Now, he finds himself subject to waivers again. If he clears, he hits free agency with a giant question mark hanging over his head. Can he get healthy? Can he return to that 2021 form? Or has the wear and tear taken a permanent toll?

What This Means For Green Bay

For the Packers, this is a clear signal that they are hitting the reset button on their secondary. Cornerback is now a blinking red light on their offseason “needs” list.

In a corresponding move, the Packers are looking ahead, signing Quarterback Kyle McCord and Defensive Lineman Jaden Crumedy to reserve/future contracts. It’s out with the big-name veteran gamble, and in with developing young talent.

The Bottom Line

Diggs is a talented player at a crossroads. At 27, he’s young enough to bounce back, but the league moves fast. He needs a team willing to bet on his upside rather than his recent injury history. As for Packers fans, the Diggs era will go down as a blink-and-you-missed-it footnote in team history.
