The Green Bay Packers have made significant investments in the offensive line over the past few seasons. Between the draft and free agency, GM Brian Gutekunst has invested plenty of resources into protecting franchise quarterback Jordan Love. What this has given the Packers is flexibility. They are not locked into certain players. The team can evaluate the play on the field and hand out contracts accordingly. This year is a pivotal year for many young offensive linemen on the team, with former third-round pick Sean Rhyan being one of them.
The Green Bay Packers selected Sean Rhyan out of UCLA in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. His NFL career got off to a rough start. He was suspended for six games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy and did not play a snap. In 2023, he saw limited work but showed promise in both run and pass blocking. Last season was when people started to see the potential. Pro Football Focus gave him a 65.5 pass-blocking grade for the whole season, and he earned an 80.1 overall grade in the last two weeks of the regular season.
Rhyan did struggle in the playoff loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, but there were plenty of factors working against him. The Eagles’ defensive line was giving everyone fits in the playoffs, and All-Pro guard Elgton Jenkins left the game early with an injury, disrupting the continuity of the line. However, Rhyan needs to continue to show growth this year. He is one of many players on the line who could earn an extension, but if he fails to impress, the team has plenty of talent waiting in the wings.
The Green Bay Packers took care of Zach Tom, signing him to a four-year, $88 million extension right before training camp. Left tackle Rasheed Walker joins Rhyan as another young player with plenty to prove in 2025. The team has been vocal about liking the former seventh-round pick, but wishes there was more consistency. Last year’s first-round pick, Jordan Morgan, and this year’s second-round pick, Anthony Belton, are promising young players and could be cheaper replacements if results aren’t shown.
One advantage Rhyan has is his versatility. With Jenkins still in a contract dispute, the team has been giving Rhyan snaps at center. If this proves to be a viable long-term option, he could move to center once Jenkins is gone (which is becoming more and more likely in the long term). While the team is tied to Tom and Aaron Banks long-term, the rest of the line is up for grabs.
The Green Bay Packers have prided themselves on being able to draft and develop offensive line talent. Tom was a fourth-round pick and is one of the better tackles in the league. If they can turn Rhyan into a quality starting guard, the offensive line could become one of the best units in the NFL.
