The Green Bay Packers have a lot they won’t reveal this early in the preseason. They won’t tip that on if quarterback Jordan Love will play in Saturday’s contest against the New York Jets. They don’t know if cornerback Nate Hobbs will play in Week 1 of the regular season against the Detroit Lions.

Hobbs had surgery on his knee on Saturday for preventative reasons. Per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, Hobbs limped around the locker room before talking to reporters after practice on Tuesday.

“Packers cornerback Nate Hobbs had a significant limp walking through the locker room on Tuesday after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus on Saturday,” Schneidman wrote. “Hobbs, perhaps the talk of Packers camp through the first week for the physical playstyle he has brought to Green Bay after four years with the Raiders, said that he suffered the injury last Thursday during a practice collision.

“Hobbs is slated to start at outside cornerback with Keisean Nixon this season and is expected to see time at the nickel, too. Head coach Matt LaFleur wouldn’t put a timetable on Hobbs’ return, only saying, ‘We’re hoping to get him back here sooner than later.’ Hobbs didn’t rule out playing Week 1 and said he’s just glad the injury wasn’t more serious.”

The Green Bay Packers have an injured starter at camp

Hobbs had a productive early start to his career with the Las Vegas Raiders before signing a four-year deal worth $48 million in March. The Packers valued the 26-year-old as a replacement for the often-injured Jaire Alexander, who is now with the Baltimore Ravens.

While the Packers believe the success procedure will allow Hobbs to play most of the regular season, the team doesn’t know when he will return. Week 1 might be like having Alexander back on the team, but at only $12 million per year.
