The Green Bay Packers added two more wide receivers in the NFL Draft, bagging both Matthew Golden and Savion Williams. Their receiver room was already crowded as it was, so now, just about everyone is on notice. Even Jayden Reed.
Mitch Widmeier of Zone Coverage feels that Reed could be under significant pressure heading into 2025, especially considering how rough of a second half he had last season.
“In the last eight games of the regular season, Reed eclipsed 49 yards only once and had five games with four or fewer targets. At times, he was invisible on offense,” Widmeier wrote. “There’s pressure on plenty of wide receivers for Green Bay this year. Still, as a former second-round pick in 2023, Reed is the one with the most to prove. He finished the year in the top-five in drops in the NFL despite having just 75 targets. He also occasionally struggled as a perimeter receiver lined up on the outside.”
Reed caught 55 passes for 857 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, averaging an impressive 15.6 yards per catch. But he simply was not consistent enough and has yet to establish himself as a true No. 1 option.
“The beginning of the 2024 season had people wondering if Reed would be the torch bearer at wide receiver for years to come,” Widmeier added. “By the end of the season, he was lumped in with everyone else on the team, with many asking who would ever become the No. 1, go-to option.”
Reed hauled in 64 receptions for 793 yards and eight scores during his rookie campaign, which had many thinking that the 25-year-old would break out in Year 2. Obviously, that did not occur, as his production stagnated.
We can blame Jordan Love for not properly delivering the football throughout the 2024 season (Love was up and down himself), but at some point, an elite receiver needs to impose his will. Reed did not do that last year. We’ll see if he can do it this coming fall.
