The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for a Wild Card playoff matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, making it the third matchup of the season between the two rivals. Pittsburgh enters the playoffs on a four-game losing streak and one of the worst odds to make the Super Bowl. It doesn't come as a surprise after the Steelers have looked very average over the last stretch of games. All seemed to be well when they were 10-3 after Week 14 and almost had the AFC North title secured. With poor performances from both sides of the ball, the team finished 10-7.
Besides the losing streak, Steeler Nation isn't super confident about Saturday because of Head Coach Mike Tomlin's playoff record. Tomlin is 8-10 during his tenure in Pittsburgh and hasn't won a playoff game since the 2016 season. He had some teams that were Super Bowl worthy, but the job could never get finished and he takes major criticism on it.
Rumors started to swirl recently of teams toying with the idea to inquire the Steelers about trading Tomlin. That idea seems highly unlikely, but NFL analysts are still bringing it up. ESPN host Mike Greenberg on Get Up Wednesday morning spoke about the Chicago Bears making a full push for Tomlin.
"I'm going to say this right now, there's no team in the NFL that needs a culture built more than the Chicago Bears," Greenberg said. "Chicago Bears should offer anything it takes to see if the Steelers will be willing to bring them Mike Tomlin and then just hand the franchise to him and get all these other people... the heck out of there."
It's a well-known fact that Tomlin is one of the most respected coaches in the league. If the Steelers were to ever part ways with him, there's little doubt he'd be heavily sought after by other teams. Tomlin has been a good coach in Pittsburgh, but fans have been getting impatient with the lack of improvement over the past few seasons.
The offense has went through a lot of ups and downs since Ben Roethlisberger got into his final years in the NFL. Questionable offensive coordinator hires were made and there were plenty of different quarterbacks the Steelers tested out. With the Steelers always not being as good as the top teams, fans have gotten restless and have called for Tomlin to be fired for some time now. Now, there's the idea of trading Tomlin to another team.
The Bears are a team that needs a full reset. After key offensive additions for them in the offseason, it seemed that Chicago would finally get back to winning under rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. However, the team went through many slumps this season and the morale there has been low. Greenberg suggesting Tomlin goes there could just be a compliment to Tomlin himself for how well he can build a culture, but it's hard not to think if the Bears or other teams are seriously thinking about inquiring about Tomlin.
Tomlin does have a no trade clause in his contract, so it'd be up to him if he wants to leave or not. It's highly unlikely the Steelers and Tomlin will part ways anytime soon, but things could also change if Tomlin doesn't boost this team to be able to compete with teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. This needs to start with hiring good coordinators that have the potential to be head coaching candidates, which Tomlin doesn't seem to do.
Although Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith has expressed that he likes where he's at in Pittsburgh, teams have been requesting to interview him for its head coaching vacancies. Before he came to the Steelers, Smith was the head coach for the Atlanta Falcons before getting fired. There were mixed opinions when Smith was hired in Pittsburgh and there's still some uncertainty now.
While Smith is overall better than the Steelers' recent offensive coordinators, the offense continues to lack in creativity. Almost every first down play is Russell Wilson handing the ball off to Najee Harris and opposing defenses have caught on to that. Smith also may be limited to plays by having a 36-year-old quarterback and not a younger guy who can do a lot more. Either way, this team is getting nowhere with a predictable offense.
Would you accept a trade for Tomlin if the Steelers were offered a lot for him?
