Grover Stewart could be the next Indianapolis Colts veteran headed elsewhere as the franchise reshapes its roster before the November 10 NFL trade deadline.
Indianapolis has traded Quenton Nelson to Seattle and DeForest Buckner to San Francisco. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has identified Stewart as a player the Colts could consider moving, although no completed deal involving the defensive tackle has been announced.
At 33 and in the final year of his contract, Stewart offers an interior presence for teams seeking help against the run. His value comes from occupying blockers, controlling gaps and allowing linebackers room to make plays.
Stewart has remained focused amid the speculation.
“I’m not worried about a trade block. I’m worried about the next team,” he said last week.
Here are three potential destinations, based on reported connections and football fit.
Buffalo offers a logical landing spot for a veteran who could strengthen its defensive tackle rotation. Sports Illustrated’s Bills coverage has identified Stewart as a potential target, noting that Ed Oliver has battled injuries and the team could benefit from another starting-caliber interior defender.
Stewart would provide size and experience on early downs while helping preserve the rotation through the season’s second half. His presence could also give Buffalo more flexibility in deploying its other defensive tackles.
The financial details would matter. Any agreement would require Buffalo to accommodate his remaining salary or negotiate an arrangement involving Indianapolis.
Green Bay has a more direct reported connection. Packer Report’s Easton Butler reported that the Packers called Indianapolis about Stewart and Buckner, with a fourth-round selection cited as Stewart’s asking price.
That reported figure represents an opening position, not an agreed return.
For Green Bay, Stewart could provide an experienced option in the middle, particularly in situations where controlling the line of scrimmage takes priority over rushing the passer. His expiring contract would make the move a short-term investment unless an extension followed.
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell proposed a Stewart trade to San Francisco before the 49ers acquired Buckner. That completed deal changes the calculation, but Stewart remains an interesting hypothetical addition.
Reuniting the longtime Indianapolis teammates could give San Francisco an established interior pairing with complementary strengths. Stewart’s run defense would complement Buckner’s ability to pressure quarterbacks.
However, another acquisition would mean committing additional money and draft resources to the position.
For Indianapolis, the decision centers on compensation. Moving Stewart could recover draft capital before free agency, while contenders must determine whether his immediate contribution justifies the cost of a veteran rental.
