The Dallas Cowboys have been one of the NFL’s most talked about teams for years. Every offseason brings bold predictions, only for many analysts to reverse course once the regular season begins. That’s what makes ESPN analyst Harry Douglas latest take stand out.
During a recent appearance on ESPN, Douglas made it clear that isn’t another example of someone buying into the Cowboys simply because of their star power.
"I am not one of these analysts that come on TV every single year," Douglas said. "'Oh the Dallas Cowboys are Super Bowl contenders.' But ladies and gentlemen I have the Dallas Cowboys for 2026 being Super Bowl contenders."
It’s a strong endorsement from someone who acknowledged he hasn’t been quick to jump on the Dallas bandwagon in previous years.
Douglas' confidence likely starts with the talent Dallas has assembled heading into the 2026 season.
Quarterback Dak Prescott returns with one of the most talented groups of playmakers in the NFC. CeeDee Lamb remains one of football’s elite receivers, while George Pickens is coming off a Pro Bowl season after giving the Cowboys another legitimate No. 1 caliber target. Dallas is also returning their feature running back Javonte Williams, who rushed for more than 1,200 yards last season and brings a physical presence to the backfield.
If Prescott stays healthy and plays at the same level as, if not better than, in 2025, the Cowboys have the offensive firepower to compete with anyone.
While the offense grabs headlines, Dallas' biggest improvement must come on the defensive side of the ball.
After struggling through one of the league’s worst defensive seasons in 2025, the Cowboys spent the offseason reshaping the unit. The addition of pass rusher Rashan Gary gives Dallas another disruptive force up front, while first-round picks Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence are expected to make an immediate impact. Young players such as Shavon Revel Jr., and Donovan Ezeiruaku are also expected to take significant steps forward. The Cowboys still have Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams in the interior defensive line to anchor against the run game.
If those additions produce the turnaround Dallas expects, the Cowboys could become one of the NFC’s most balanced teams.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer enters his second season knowing expectations have changed.
After an up-and-down first year, Dallas believes another offseason in Schottenheimer’s system, combined with an upgraded roster, will lead to a much better product on the field. The talent has never been the question for the Cowboys. Consistency has.
That’s why Douglas' prediction is noteworthy. It’s not a bad take due to the fact that Dallas has gotten better on the defensive side of the ball. He isn’t making it because Dallas has a recognizable logo or massive fanbase. He’s making it because he also believes this roster has finally been built to compete with the NFC’s best.
The Cowboys still have to prove it on the field, but if Douglas is right, 2026 could be the year Dallas finally lives up to its championship expectations.
