Head Coach or Coordinator?

Maybe it’s recency bias, but this cycle of coaching vacancies and big names seems plentiful. Whether it be a promotion from a coordinator role, a demotion from a head coach position, or a lateral move, I want to take a stab at where some hot names could evolve. More so, I’d like to talk through what type of job makes the most sense based on their resumes and current market needs in the NFL sphere.

Head Coach or Coordinator?

Brian Flores – Most recently DC in Minnesota (three seasons)

Head Coach – This is the year that a team will take a chance at putting Flores back in the driver’s seat after some tumultuous waters in Miami. His defense has been consistently elite, and he knows how to develop players all over the field.

Kliff Kingsbury – Most recently OC in Washington (two seasons)

Coordinator – His resume just isn’t strong enough to warrant another shot just yet. This is coupled with his middling head coaching gig in Arizona a couple of seasons ago. He looked great last year working with the rookie QB Daniels in Washington (would Daniels have made any OC look good last year?), But Kingsbury should remain an offensive playcaller.

Mike McDaniel – Most recently Head Coach in Miami (six seasons)

Coordinator – One of the most divisive of names right now, and anyone who has followed me for years knows I love the man. HOWEVER, he did not prove to be able to hold his squad together throughout a lot of public squabbling amongst teammates, for the better part of two seasons. Yes. That would be the end of the head coaching discussion if I were running an NFL team searching for my next leader. The man is a shrewd offensive mind and should be allowed to flourish in that role.

Jeff Hafley – Most recently DC in Green Bay (two seasons and still currently employed)

Coordinator – I’m going to manifest that Jeff Hafley is a horrible interviewer and stays put in Green Bay for…reasons.

Raheem Morris – Most recently Head Coach in Atlanta (two seasons)

Coordinator — Given the pool of names at this moment, Morris should prepare to step down into a defensive coordinator role at this moment in time.

Kevin Stefanski – Most recently Head Coach in Cleveland (six seasons)

Head Coach.- The two-time Coach of the Year will for SURE find a landing spot at the head coaching level. Most, if not all, of the Cleveland undoing can be blamed on the front office, and anyone who does not live under a rock knows that.

Robert Saleh – Most recently DC in San Francisco (two seasons)

Coordinator – Saleh got Aaron Rodgers’d in his inaugural head coaching debut. However, he is just too good at his job. I can see Saleh getting some looks down the road, but for now, I think he stays put in San Francisco.

Matt Nagy – Most recently OC in Kansas City (five seasons)

Coordinator – Call it bad luck, poor timing, whatever. His inconsistency would give me pause as a hiring GM of a franchise. As an offensive playcaller, most recently with experience with Patrick Mahomes, his phone should be ringing off the hook.

Chris Shula – Most recently DC in Los Angeles Rams (two seasons)

Head Coach – His name caught fire in multiple circles around the NFL, and that is surely a sign that GMs see those leadership intangibles – not to mention his ability to develop and scheme a top-10 defense.

Mike McCarthy – Most Recently Living his best life outside of the coaching world

Head Coach – There will surely be a team out there that appreciates his experience and track record as a head coach of two historic franchises. Big Mike will be out there in 2026 with a new team as the head honcho.

Those are not a comprehensive list, of course, but rather a pool of just some of the common names that are jockeying around the league circuit. Give us your hottest takes on someone who could shock the league!
