The Los Angeles Rams hosted their SoFi Stadium co-tenants, the L.A. Chargers, on Saturday afternoon in their second game of the preseason.

None of the Rams’ starters played and Sean McVay didn’t even coach the game as he handed over duties to Aubrey Plessant for the second consecutive year. And once again, Pleasant was able to guide the Rams to a win over the Chargers, this time in thrilling fashion with a come-from-behind 23-22 victory.

Unlike the Rams, the Chargers decided to play their starters for a series to begin the game. And the Rams’ backups did more than hold their own as they limited Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense to a field goal.

On the Rams’ first possession, Stetson Bennett led the team right down the field against the Chargers starters, capping off a really impressive drive with a Konata Mumpfield touchdown.

Bennett looked really good in the Rams’ preseason opener, and that continued in this one. He has really grasped the Rams’ offense and limited his mistakes heading into his third season.

While the Rams led most of the game, things started to go south late as the Chargers returned a punt for a touchdown to regain the lead. Bennett then made his lone mistake of the night, a bad interception in the fourth quarter that had the Chargers in good shape to pick up a win.

The Rams’ defense stepped up with some big stops though, giving Bennett and the offense one last chance at a game-winning drive with less than two minutes to go.

As he did so many times at Georgia, Bennett stayed poised and began to lead the Rams down the field. That included two fourth down conversions, one of which was the play of the game when Bennett found Brennan Presley on a bomb down the center of the field to set the team up in the red zone.

With just a few seconds to play, Bennett then hit Tru Edwards in the end-zone for the game-winning touchdown to complete the comeback. Overall on the day, Bennett completed 28 of 40 passes for 324 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

A number of the Rams’ young players flashed as Jarquez Hunter and Cody Schrader continued running the ball well while Presley, Mumpfield, Tru Edwards, Xavier Smith and Mario Edwards made some big plays through the air.

Brennan Jackson was the standout for the Rams on the other side of the ball, recording a pair of sacks as he looks to work his way into the edge rotation.

What’s next for the Rams

The Rams will wrap up the preseason by hitting the road for the first time, taking on the Cleveland Browns on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT. As usual, the Rams’ starters will not be suited up, and it remains to be seen if Stetson Bennett will even play after two solid outings so far.
