DeAndre Hopkins, the Clemson alumnus and Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver, made his Super Bowl debut in Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite a challenging game, Hopkins contributed significantly to the Chiefs offense late in the game.
Chiefs WR DeAndre Hopkins arriving to Super Bowl LIX. Hopkins’ father left him this coat upon his death in 1992, the same year Hopkins was born. Hopkins promised himself he would wear it to his wedding or a Super Bowl, whichever came first. He said it required some light tailoring to perfect the fit.
In the third quarter, with the Chiefs trailing, Hopkins had a notable opportunity. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes delivered a well-placed pass to Hopkins, who was open and poised to make a substantial gain. However, Hopkins dropped the pass, leading to a punt and a missed chance to close the scoring gap.
Despite this setback, Hopkins rebounded in the fourth quarter. With approximately 2:54 remaining, Mahomes connected with Hopkins for a 7-yard touchdown reception, marking Hopkins' first Super Bowl touchdown.
Following the touchdown, the Chiefs attempted a two-point conversion to narrow the deficit. Mahomes targeted Hopkins again, and the pass was completed, successfully converting the two points. However, the Chiefs' efforts fell short, and the Eagles secured a 40-22 victory, denying the Chiefs a third consecutive Super Bowl title.
Despite the loss, Hopkins' performance in his first Super Bowl showcased his resilience and skill, contributing to the Chiefs' offense in a challenging game. DeAndre Hopkins joined William Perry (one rushing touchdown in Super Bowl XX) and Tee Higgins (two receiving touchdowns in Super Bowl LVI) to become the third Clemson product to score a touchdown in a Super Bowl.
