Houston Texans Could Replace C.J. Stroud With Shocking Move

Tankathon’s latest 2027 NFL mock draft has the Houston Texans selecting Notre Dame quarterback C.J. Carr with the No. 4 overall pick, a projection that immediately raises the question hanging over NRG Stadium: Could another C.J. replace C.J. Stroud?

Carr is listed at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds. Through two games he is 35 of 49 for 492 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions, a 71.4 completion rate and a 196.2 passer rating.

He went 19 of 29 for 239 yards and two scores in a 41-13 win over Wisconsin, then 16 of 20 for 253 yards and four touchdowns in a 52-0 rout of Rice.

Those starts follow a 2025 season in which the Saline, Michigan, product completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 2,741 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions as a first-year starter.

Career totals stand at 3,233 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and six interceptions. Compact mechanics and efficiency are the scouting notes. Arm talent is described as above average, not elite. Frame and a thin résumé remain the knocks.

Stroud is not going anywhere this year. Houston picked up his fifth-year option for 2027 at $25.9 million. Extension talks paused until after the season. He is 24, 28-18 as a starter and still under team control.

The 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year has not recaptured that debut form. After 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions as a rookie, the past two seasons have been more uneven. A four-interception playoff loss at New England last winter lingered into this offseason.

Week 1 did not settle the debate. Stroud completed 26 of 38 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns in a 36-31 loss to Buffalo. He also lost two fumbles, including one on a late sack near the goal line.

That is the gap a mock like Tankathon is probing. If 2026 does not restore Stroud to franchise-quarterback pricing — deals now starting near $50 million per year and climbing — Houston will enter 2027 with a decision, not just a negotiation.

Carr would be the high-upside alternative on a loaded quarterback board. Arch Manning, Dante Moore and Jeremiah Smith sit ahead of him in this mock. Sayin and Darian Mensah follow.

A No. 4 pick on Carr would only make sense if the Texans finish near the bottom or trade up. After one week, Tankathon has Houston in that range. Sixteen games remain.

The initials make the headline easy. The football is harder. Stroud has already proven he can play at a high level in this building. Carr has proven he can run Notre Dame’s offense without turnovers.

Tankathon updates after every game and factors need. Need at quarterback in Houston is still a what-if. The mock treats it as a live one.

If Stroud rebounds, Carr becomes someone else’s first-round quarterback. If he does not, the Texans will have spent a year studying whether another C.J. is the answer they already thought they had.
