The Houston Texans have re-signed quarterback Mark Gronowski to their practice squad, according to reporting from Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2.
The move returns the undrafted rookie to a familiar role after a brief stint on the active roster, continuing the fluctuating path that has defined the early stages of his professional career.
Gronowski, who turns 25 this month, entered the league after a decorated college tenure that began at South Dakota State. There he started for four seasons, leading the Jackrabbits to back-to-back FCS national championships in 2022 and 2023 while earning the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the subdivision during the latter campaign.
He finished his time in Brookings with more than 10,000 passing yards and dozens of rushing scores before transferring to Iowa for the 2025 season.
At Iowa, he started all 13 games, throwing for 1,741 yards and 10 touchdowns while adding 545 yards and a Big Ten-leading 16 scores on the ground.
Across all levels, he compiled 58 wins as a starter, the most by any quarterback in NCAA history, along with more than 12,000 career passing yards, 103 touchdown passes, and 53 rushing touchdowns.
After going undrafted in 2026, Gronowski signed with the Miami Dolphins. He cycled through multiple waivers and practice-squad stints during training camp and the preseason before the Dolphins ultimately released him.
The Texans, dealing with a thin quarterback room after Graham Mertz suffered a torn ACL in the preseason, signed him to their practice squad on September 8.
He was released nine days later, then signed to the 53-man roster on October 7.
Three days after that, the team waived him again, clearing space to activate defensive tackle Kayden McDonald from injured reserve, return safety M.J. Stewart from the physically unable to perform list, and elevate cornerback Bryce Hall and linebacker Kenneth Murray.
Sources indicated at the time that Gronowski was expected to clear waivers and rejoin the practice squad, which has now occurred.
In Houston he remains depth behind starter C.J. Stroud and backup Davis Mills. His dual-threat skill set offers value on the scout team and as an emergency option that can be elevated under league rules.
The re-signing keeps a proven winner and athletic quarterback in the building while the Texans manage a roster that has already seen multiple injury-related adjustments early in the season. For Gronowski, the move provides continued stability after a whirlwind first several months in the NFL.
Houston captured its first win of the season against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
