How Carson Wentz won Super Bowl LIX for Eagles

After winning Super Bowl LII, albeit injured on the bench, quarterback Carson Wentz was supposed to return to his starting position and lead a potential Philadelphia Eagles dynasty.

As fans well know, that didn't happen and after three disappointing seasons Philadelphia traded him to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 first-round pick.

In addition to the two picks Philadelphia received from Indianapolis, the team flipped the 2022 first-rounder (among others) with the New Orleans Saints for its 2022 first-rounder, a 2023 first-round selection plus three other mid-round picks ahead of the 2022 draft.

Sunday night saw Wentz return to the Super Bowl but this time backing up Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs' sideline. Wentz was not victorious from the bench again this time but he was the key to Philadelphia's 40-22 win, roughly four years in the making.

If it weren't for the Wentz trade in 2021, the Eagles would not have acquired the draft assets necessary to acquire the key pieces to their Super Bowl LIX triumph.

Wide receiver DeVonta Smith was drafted 10th overall in 2021, trading up two spots with the Dallas Cowboys by handing over the 12th pick and the 84th pick (Indianapolis' third-rounder). He went on to score a game-sealing 46-yard touchdown on Sunday.

On draft day 2022, wide receiver A.J. Brown was traded from the Tennessee Titans to Philadelphia using New Orleans' first-round pick (No. 18 overall) and third-round pick (No. 101).

He also scored a touchdown, ironically in New Orleans, during Super Bowl LIX.

In 2023, Philadelphia drafted Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter with the ninth overall pick — acquired via the Chicago Bears, who received the No. 10 pick (originally belonging to who else but New Orleans).

Carter recorded two QB hits during Super Bowl LIX, adding to the crucial pressure that caused Mahomes to make multiple game-deciding mistakes.

Speaking of those mistakes, the most crucial was an interception thrown in the second quarter and returned for a touchdown by rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean.

Of course, DeJean's big play couldn't happen without the Wentz trade either.

He was selected 40th overall in the 2024 draft using a pick acquired via the Washington Commanders in exchange for a package of selections which included New Orleans' second-rounder (No. 50).

It seems rather round-about but credit is due to general manager Howie Roseman for the rebuilding job he accomplished over the last four seasons.
