Another close one but let’s not count the moral victory. The Miami Dolphins need actual wins to stack up. Despite a late fourth-quarter rally, the Miami Dolphins fell short at home, dropping a 24-19 decision to the New England Patriots on Sunday. The loss came down to missed opportunities, offensive line struggles, and an inability to contain New England’s efficient aerial attack in the second half.

Hot Start Fades Into Third-Quarter Slump

Miami controlled the tempo early on. Guided by quarterback Malik Willis, the Dolphins built a 13-3 lead by halftime. Kicker Zane Gonzalez connected on two field goals—including a booming 52-yarder—and Willis capped off the first-half surge with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Malik Washington.

However, the third quarter belonged entirely to New England. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye sparkled, finishing an ultra-efficient 16-of-20 for 199 yards and two touchdowns. New England orchestrated a 14-point unanswered swing in the third quarter to snatch a 17-13 lead, completely shifting the game’s momentum. Maye also damaged the Dolphins on the ground, adding a rushing touchdown to his day.

Offensive Line Struggles Halt the Comeback

While New England orchestrated a 14-point unanswered swing in the third quarter to snatch a 17-13 lead, he spent most of the afternoon under relentless duress. The Patriots’ pass rush consistently overwhelmed Miami’s front line, sacking Willis 5 times and disrupting the offense’s rhythm.

Miami’s ground game found modest success behind rookie Ollie Gordon II, who carried the load 19 times for 69 yards, but the Dolphins struggled to sustain drives when it mattered most, finishing just 7-of-14 on third downs.

A Late Spark, But Too Little Too Late

Down 24-13 in the final frame, Willis provided a flash of hope, finding Kevin Coleman Jr. for a spectacular 35-yard touchdown strike to trim the deficit to 24-19. Needing a crucial two-point conversion to make it a field-goal game, Miami’s pass attempt failed.

Defensively, the Dolphins had bright spots. Linebacker Jordyn Brooks was a force all over the field, racking up 11 tackles, while Chop Robinson terrorized Maye with 2.0 sacks. Cornerback Julius Brents also secured a fumble recovery, but the defense couldn’t get the final stop required to give the offense one last shot at a game-winning drive.

With the 24-19 defeat, head coach Jeff Hafley and the Dolphins will look to patch their pass protection issues as they prepare for next week’s matchup.
