Jaxson Dart of the New York Giants showed accountability when the rookie quarterback accepted blame after he committed three costly turnovers in the club's 26-14 loss to what had been a winless New Orleans Saints (1-4) side this past Sunday.
While speaking with reporters on Monday, Giants head coach Brian Daboll addressed what Dart said after the 22-year-old suffered his first defeat as a pro.
"Even after the first game he played and we won, he goes back to the things that he could have done better," Daboll said about Dart, per the Giants' website. "I've got a tremendous amount of respect for the young man and how he's handled really everything on the field, off the field. It's no surprise that's the type of guy that he is. He's a pleasure to work with. I don't want to sell him short, and I know what he'll say, but I thought he did a lot of good things that gave us chances. We've got to take advantage of those chances."
Dart made his first regular-season start against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 28 and completed 13-of-20 attempts for 111 yards with a touchdown on a shovel pass in the 21-18 win. He also tallied 54 rushing yards and a score on 10 carries.
Dart then led touchdown drives on New York's first two possessions against New Orleans before things fell apart for the visitors. Specifically, he lost a fumble when he dropped the ball while looking to run early in the third quarter. He later tossed two interceptions in the second half.
After the loss that dropped the Giants to 1-4 on the season, Dart directly said that he needed "to cut that s— out" regarding his turnovers. Daboll suggested that Dart's teammates appreciated how the first-year pro handled what could be a frustrating experience for any young signal-caller.
"I think they all respect Jaxson for his talents, one, and how he is," Daboll said about the Giants locker room. "He's a pretty humble guy. They see how he works. They know he's a rookie. Again, there are going to be ups and downs. There's no young quarterback I'd rather have to work with than Jaxson."
Things get no easier for Dart and Co., as the Giants have to host a Philadelphia Eagles (4-1) team coming off its first loss of the season this Thursday night. As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had Big Blue as a big 7.5-point underdog for that matchup.
