In 2020, Patrick Mahomes signed what was then the largest contract in American sports history: a 10-year extension with the Kansas City Chiefs valued at $450 million.
Mahomes' deal with the Chiefs came roughly five months after he led Kansas City to a win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.
Then, in September 2023, Mahomes and the Chiefs agreed to a restructured contract that pays him $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026, the most in history over a four-year span. The agreement could reach $218.1 million with escalators by the end of 2026.
The restructured deal also creates an opportunity for both sides to renegotiate after the 2026 season.
As of 2025, Mahomes' once-historic deal doesn't crack the top 10 in average annual value ($45 million) for NFL quarterbacks. Not even his $141.5 million in guaranteed money ranks in the top 10.
Mahomes has a potential opt-out after the 2027 season. His base salary per season, according to Spotrac.com:
