Perhaps the worst part about watching one of the league’s worst teams is the opportunity cost. Fans of teams around the league get to watch superstars duel on prime-time television for the right to go to the playoffs. Their favorite players are on highlight reels and advertisements with the promise that tuning on on Sunday means witnessing greatness.
For New York Giants fans, there’s just five more weekends until the sweet release of the NFL offseason.
Epitomizing the gap between New York and the pantheon of the league’s elite is the team’s Week 15 contest against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Ravens have struggled in recent weeks, falling to 8-5 after a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, a development largely tied to defensive inconsistencies and kicker Justin Tucker’s woeful stretch.
But after a Week 14 bye, Baltimore will travel to MetLife Stadium to face a team that is all but locked into last place. As such, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is ready to flush the recent loss and get to the break.
"She just cussed me out,” Jackson said, regarding his mother criticizing his play. “I'm mad [punches into his palm], so we're going to get after it, bruh, I'm not going to lie to you. I can't wait for this bye to get on. We got the Giants coming up. I'm ready to go."
New York wouldn’t be favored against Baltimore on any day this season, but the added break spells trouble for Big Blue.
Jackson, the two-time MVP, is the priority. But the Ravens boast one of the league’s elite ground games. Running back Derrick Henry against a Giants defense without defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence is a recipe for disaster.
Few have been able to slow Baltimore’s offense down. And if New York falls behind, there might not be an offense that is harder to stop when operating from ahead. The pass rush is in for a nightmare, the integrity of the run defense will be tested, and every missed tackle has the opportunity to break for a big gain.
Fighting for a playoff spot, the Ravens should have plenty to play for. They’ll enter the week as likely double-digit favorites. Without a strong showing in Week 14, there’s little reason to trust that the Giants can keep things close.
New York remains the only NFC team to take down Jackson. In Week 15, though, revenge is in the forecast.
