The Pittsburgh Steelers' decision to place a rarely-used unrestricted free agent tender on Aaron Rodgers sparked a variety of takes regarding the future of the veteran quarterback.
Some have wondered if Rodgers could feel annoyed or even upset about the move. During a Wednesday appearance on Pittsburgh sports radio station 93.7 The Fan, Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly of "The Pat McAfee Show" poured cold water over such theories.
"What I've been led to believe is [the Steelers] called [Rodgers] up and said, 'Hey, this is what we're doing.' He didn't care," Kaboly said about the latest development in this saga, per Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot.
In using the tender, Pittsburgh will receive a compensatory draft pick if Rodgers signs with another team before July 22 or the first day of the Steelers' training camp, whichever comes later. After that, Pittsburgh would have exclusive negotiating rights for the future Hall of Famer.
Meanwhile, Kaboly is among those who believe Rodgers will re-sign with the Steelers before the organized team activities begin on May 18. On Wednesday, Kaboly expanded on why he thinks that will be the case.
"Trying to put the puzzle pieces together of what [Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy] said a couple of weeks ago, of it takes eight installations, or eight practices, to install the entire offense," Kaboly explained, according to Jake Brockhoff of Steelers Depot. "Yes, I think he's going to show up. For the voluntary part, actually. Once again, this is just me trying to put the puzzle pieces together here. The first three OTAs, the second three OTAs, the mandatory minicamp. Then they'll have four [OTAs] after the mandatory minicamp, which it looks like they're gonna reserve for younger guys."
As Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk shared, the Steelers' mandatory minicamp is scheduled to run from June 2-4. It sounds like people with inside knowledge of the organization believe Rodgers will be with the team and on the practice field before those mandatory sessions begin.
