Free-agent running back Tyler Allgeier agreed to a two-year, $12.25 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals, giving the Red Birds a formidable rushing rotation after injuries wrecked the backfield in 2025. The former Atlanta Falcons back offers a productive early-down runner with 514 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 143 carries as Bijan Robinson's sidekick last year.
Arizona already reworked veteran James Conner’s contract to keep him for 2026, and Trey Benson is still in the mix after his knee injury ended his 2025 season. That implies Allgeier enters a crowded room rather than having a clean path to lead-back volume, but this one could sway in his favor in no time given that Benson's short career has been marred by injury, and Conner is no stranger to missing time, either.
The nearly 31-year-old Conner will likely be the team's primary third-down back, though we certainly could see something in the nature of a 60/40 split for overall backfield utilization. Allgeier has the chops to play a versatile role, but he is more naturally a two-down back who can chip in aerially when needed.
As it stands, Allgeier is this backfield's most valuable option for fantasy managers in non-PPR scoring, and he probably ekes out that crown in reception-rewarding formats, too. He is a reliable, physical complement who can handle short-yardage work and should dominate the backfield if Conner misses time again. Treat him as a modest RB3 in all formats for now, but keep tabs on his offseason.
Still, unless Arizona sharply reduces Conner’s role or Benson falls behind, Allgeier projects more as a touchdown-dependent flex consideration than a weekly starter. He has slim upside as a breakout candidate, however.
Conner is a fringe PPR option who will be frequently serviceable for those in a pinch, but he is a low-tier RB3 and more palatable fourth back. Benson may not even make the roster if Allgeier looks the part and Conner has spring in his step, but the cost of keeping the third-year pro around is low enough to justify the Cards stashing him as an insurance policy.
