Ben Johnson is no longer with the Detroit Lions. He ran off to Chicago to coach the Bears after the Lions got eliminated in the Divisional round of the playoffs. The feeling right now from fans and national media outlets is that he took the creativity and trick plays with him.

Now that Johnson is coming back to Ford Field with the Bears for the first time, the question is, how do the Lions defend those trick plays and the creativity? Neither of which Johnson seemingly didn't display in the Bears' Week 1 game against the Vikings. Campbell's answer is pretty simple.

Dan Campbell doesn't care about trick plays

"Well, you'll practice one or two things. You do for every opponent. But I mean, I don't really care about trick plays. Let's just handle the meat and potatoes of an offense, a defense, what we think they're going to hang their hat on? And let's stop that first. Let's worry about that. Let's make sure we're all on point, and we'll handle the other stuff with our rules. You got to have proper eyes, man. You know, we give you those rules for a reason. And look, they may hit us on one that's all right, you know, that happens. Get back in the huddle. Let's go to the next play."

It's really that simple. Johnson may have a ton of creativity, but you saw it in Detroit. It's not like it was on every single play, and there were times when you didn't see trick plays at all. It's just the nature of the beast. Like Campbell said, they might get one on the Lions. There's really no way to be prepared for this.

As far as the thinking that maybe Campbell might be aware of some trick plays Johnson didn't run with the Lions last year, and maybe he'll run those on Sunday, there's not a big concern there either.

"No, we've got a very large menu of things. So, you know, there can be anything, but we'll be good. I mean, you can't sit there and paralyze yourself with what if? What if? What if? What if? The most important thing is you'll get in trouble if you don't handle the nuts and bolts of an offense. If you can't stop the run, you know, we bleed out explosives, then that's where you can get in trouble. So I'm not worried about the other stuff from that."

This is a big reason why the theme of this week from Dan Campbell has been all about getting back to basics. The Lions want to focus on making sure they're taking care of the little things before they worry about some more exotic things. This is the way to go if you ask me.
