Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes spoke to media members on Thursday about his former teammate, Tyreek Hill, who suffered a devastating knee injury on "Monday Night Football" against the New York Jets.
Mahomes reacted to the injury in real time , sending prayers to the Miami Dolphins wideout. When asked about that moment, Mahomes elaborated and confirmed that he has since spoken with Hill.
“Yeah, I mean, I talked to him (Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill) a little bit, but more than anything, just sending prayers his way because you never want to see that happen in football," Mahomes said. "And it’s part of the game, but it’s a terrible part of the game. And I know how he works, so I’m excited to watch his comeback now. He’ll get to work and be back at it, but obviously praying for him and his family because you never want to see that on the football field.”
Hill underwent a successful surgery on Tuesday to repair his dislocated left knee, which included a torn ACL and multiple torn ligaments. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said all of the ligaments were repaired in a single surgery, with no nerve damage, blood flow issues, broken bones, or cartilage issues to speak of. He told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Hill will play next season and the start of the 2026 NFL season is, in fact, a realistic goal. But that's highly unlikely to be in Miami with the Dolphins.
Life after Tyreek Hill starts now for the Dolphins because $11 million in salary will be guaranteed on the third day of the league calendar year next March. Miami can cut ties with the 31-year-old wide receiver any time before then without paying him a single guaranteed dollar beyond what is owed in 2025. So, where will Hill end up after his time in Miami has come to an end?
A reunion between Hill and the Chiefs is likelier now than it ever was before because finances are unlikely to be a significant sticking point. How many teams are going to take a chance on an over-30 wide receiver coming off a significant knee injury? Probably the team that knows how he works and goes about his business, like Mahomes says.
