I Love the Miami Dolphins Season So Far

Maybe it’s Stockholm syndrome, or low expectations from years of mediocrity; it could even be a slightly inflammatory headline designed to get clicks. Most likely it is a combination of the three. However, I’m actually enjoying the Dolphins season so far.

The Miami Dolphins, the team I love dearly even though they seem to hate me back, are 0-5 this season. They are currently slated to get the 3rd overall pick in next April’s draft, which I only know because there’s really nothing better to do than obsess over mock drafts as a Dolphins fan this season. They aren’t going to make the playoffs; at this point, I’m worried they won’t win a single game.

That said, I’ve enjoyed the season immensely. Okay, “immensely” is probably the wrong word, but I’ve enjoyed parts of the season quite a bit. Chiefly, the rookie class’s play. This season has been about two things: whether Malik Willis can be the guy moving forward and how the rookie class plays.

For Willis, it is still unclear, though after five games, he hasn’t played well, and fans are rumbling about benching him for Kyle McCord. Meanwhile, the rookies have stood out.

Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez is already one of the team’s best players after just five games. He already has 57 tackles, including 14 in his debut against the Las Vegas Raiders and 18 against the Minnesota Vikings. He also added an interception on an impressive play.

Cornerback Chris Johnson has continued to improve each week. Against the Cincinnati Bengals, he recorded six tackles and forced a fumble. His Pro Football Focus grade of 38.8 is 21st among 104 qualified cornerbacks.

Offensively, Kadyn Protor has been solid on the offensive line. Wide receivers Caleb Doublas and Chris Bell have each shown flashes. In Douglas’ first game, he posted 5 receptions for 94 yards. Bell has 5 receptions for 92 yards, but his most impressive play didn’t count as he stepped out of bounds before hauling in what would have been a 68-yard touchdown. A true rookie mistake and hopefully one he learns from.

So yeah, it is tough to watch Miami lose week in and week out, but I implore you to relax and watch the rookies develop. We all knew this would be a rebuilding year, and the rookies’ play, plus the hard-nosed culture head coach Jeff Hafley is building, will be the building blocks for future success.
