Detroit Lions training camp is almost over, and we're less than a week away from Tuesday's final cutdown. Every year, the Lions cut players that you probably think shouldn't be cut and then bring them back on the practice squad. Sometimes, the Lions will cut a player and not get him back because he'll get claimed on waivers or sign with another team's practice squad.
That's likely to happen again this year. Here are three players that the Lions might not be able to get back if they cut them:
This is a pretty similar situation to Isaiah Williams' last year. He showed out so much in the preseason that the Lions just couldn't cut him because he was likely going to get claimed. Eventually, they had to cut him to make room for players returning from injury, and he got claimed by the Bengals immediately.
That could happen with Meeks. There are a lot of receiver-needy teams out there that could put in a claim on Meeks if he hits the wire, and he could get more opportunity elsewhere. Even if he doesn't get claimed, the chance that he could get a better opportunity elsewhere without Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Isaac TeSlaa, and more taking up spots seems like an option.
Everyone sees how good this guy has been in the preseason. If the Lions bring back Za'Darius Smith ahead of the cutdown or feel like Isaac Ukwu is the better way to go, Lynn could be the odd man out. You can only have so many defensive linemen spots. Lynn could sneaki ly get claimed. There's something there, and I'm sure a team that needs an edge rusher deep in its rotation would love to see what he can do for them. With that said, I don't see him getting cut. He should make the Lions' 53-man roster, but you never know for sure.
Don't try to talk yourself into the idea that every team in the NFL is super smart, and they've been watching Hooker struggle all summer. If he gets cut, someone will claim him on the waiver wire. I mean, Nathan Peterman gets signed every year. Clearly, there are some questionable quarterback evaluators out there.
Still, Hooker is talented. He has some mental drawbacks to his game that he needs to address, and there are teams out there that feel they can be the ones to help him overcome them. It will be interesting to see what the Lions do here.
