FOXBOROUGH, Mass - Speaking to reporters, New England Patriots defensive coordinator Terrell Williams gave an update on his health situation after head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters the news prior to rookie minicamp.
Williams was speaking on Zoom, revealing that he is in Detroit.
“I want to make it clear that I’m away from the building, but I’m not away from the team,” Williams said on Friday. “I’m doing good. I’m not away from the football team.
“I came back home here to Detroit, for spring break, and had a little medical scare. I mean, it wasn’t a little medical scare. It was a medical scare,” he added. “Since then, per doctor’s orders, I’ve kind of stayed here, in Detroit, and been handling that.”
Williams also took a moment to thank the organization, specifically praising Mike Vrabel for being so supportive during this time.
“Really want to thank the New England Patriots organization, but in particular Stretch (vice president of football operations and strategy John Streicher) and Mike Vrabel. Vrabes has been unbelievable. I mean, I talk to him at least once a day, and he’s he’s been unbelievably supportive in everything that we’re doing. We communicate every day."
And he also acknowledged inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr who has been taking over his responsibilities in his absence.
"Zak Kuhr has done an unbelievable job while I’ve been away, and we’ve communicated daily on just the things that need to get done," he said. “He’s an unbelievably smart guy... I’ve grown to respect him in a short amount of time. I mean, we were together really, for four of those years in Tennessee, and I got the utmost respect. I think he’s going to be a superstar in this league, smart and more than anything, I think that he has the ability to connect with players."
This health scare has really put things into perspective for Williams, who had a message for everyone.
"Football is a job that obviously there’s some stress involved, but just eating right, working out, doing the things that, you know, if you’re supposed to take any kind of medication and take it,” Williams said. "I think sometimes as, like I told the players, I mean, we all think we’re invincible. We all think we’re going to live forever. We all think that this can happen to us... It’s just, I’ve ignored doctors. I’ve ignored everyone and just kind of live my life. And while it was fun, I realized that you know what? You gotta take care of yourself, man, and that’s what I’m doing.”
