New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll was asked a simple question about former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jalin Hyatt on Thursday.
But instead of giving an informative answer, Daboll was oddly coy in his response.
"What was the focus for [Hyatt], obviously last year was a tough year for him?" asked a reporter.
"Yeah, look, I'm not going to get into the details and the specifics of what we talk to the guys about," said Daboll. "But he's done a nice job of coming out here and working hard."
"Well, what have you seen him improve?" asked a reporter in a follow up question.
"He's improved in really all facets of being a receiver, and we're going to need him to continue to do that in training camp," answered Daboll.

That was a very Bill Belichick-like response from Daboll (Daboll did spend a significant amount of time on Belichick's staff, for what it's worth).
It also came across as weirdly guarded.
The mystery surrounding Hyatt's usage lack of usage last season after a promising rookie season in 2023 is of great interest to fans. Hyatt received a significant amount of praise from Daboll and other Giants coaches last summer, yet he was barely used in 2024.
So it's understandable if the vague praise for Hyatt on Thursday feels a bit hollow.
For whatever reason, Daboll hasn't been willing to give a detailed explanation to fans or the media about where Hyatt is in his development, or why he received barely any opportunities last season. Based on his brief and somewhat defensive comments on Thursday, I don't think we can glean much about what Hyatt’s role might be in 2025. After all, we've already heard Daboll praise Hyatt all summer, only to bury him on the depth chart once the season started. Who’s to say that won’t happen again?
