The Indianapolis Colts reported to Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, on Wednesday for training camp ahead of the 2025 NFL season. It is a huge training camp for the team in general, but an even bigger one for third-year Quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr.
The team added Quarterback Daniel Jones this offseason to compete with Richardson for the QB one spot this season. There are also plenty of other position battles for the team. Well, let’s dive into what happened on day one of camp.
The first day of training camp for NFL players is a bunch of knocking the rust off and getting back into a groove. The first thing I noticed was that Jones led the reps with the first team, then Richardson went with the first team. As far as which QB is ahead at the end of day one, it’s a dead-even sprint. Richardson went 4-of-11 with three clear drops, and Jones, on the other hand, went 6-of-8 with one clear highlight play, which was an over-the-shoulder throw to Anthony Gould, a second-team player.
The second thing I would like to point out is how great the Colts’ defense looked on day one. They moved with a purpose while also making huge plays. There were several pass breakups by several different corners, and Kenny Moore had an interception. The player that caught my eye, as well as Head Coach Shane Steichen, was rookie Cornerback Justin Walley. Steichen said that Walley “was a damn good player.” You often don’t hear the head coach talk about rookies like that.
The first day of training camp showed us that this team has much to be encouraged about, but also has ground to cover before the hot opener on September 7 against the Dolphins. The drops are not a reason for concern on day one. If it continues, then it will be a problem. I am excited about this defense led by Lou Anarumo, which I feel can be a top-five defense this season.
