Injury to Chiefs' Week 12 hero Spencer Shrader leads to reunion with a familiar face at kicker

The Kansas City Chiefs just can't seem to get past their horrid injury luck during the 2024 NFL season.

As first reported by Arrowhead Live , Chiefs backup K Spencer Shrader suffered a hamstring injury that will cause him to miss the team's Week 13 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. It's not yet clear if Shrader will be placed on injured reserve, but he'll at least miss practice on Tuesday.

The Chiefs already dealt with starting K Harrison Butker suffering a meniscus injury during practice, but they found Shrader on the New York Jets' practice squad. Shrader has been perfect in his two starts for Kansas City, going 6-of-6 on extra points and 3-of-3 on field goals,  including the game-winner in Week 12 against the Carolina Panthers

With Butker still two weeks out from being able to return from injured reserve, the Chiefs turned to a familiar face. When Butker previously went down with an ankle injury in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season, they turned to Matthew Wright to bring some consistency to the kicking game. They'll turn to Wright again, who was signed to the practice squad on Tuesday.

After Matt Ammendola struggled in Week 2 and Week 3, the Chiefs signed Wright to the practice squad. Wright appeared in two games for the Chiefs in 2022, in Week 4 and Week 5. During that time, Wright was 8-of-8 on extra points and 3-of-4 on field goals. He missed a 37-yarder against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5, but he also set a franchise record 58-yard field goal in the same game.

That didn't last long, though. Butker would return from his ankle injury a week later and reset the record with a 63-yard field goal. Wright was later poached off the Kansas City practice squad by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Wright has since kicked for the Steelers, Carolina Panthers, and most recently the San Francisco 49ers. He's a perfect 10-of-10 on extra points and 15-of-18 on field goals in those six games with other squads.

He'll be asked to bring more to the Chiefs' kicking game in Week 13 against a familiar opponent.
