Inside source sounds alarms about Aaron Rodgers, Mike McCarthy reunion with Steelers

As recently as Monday, reports continued to suggest that it is a matter of when and not if Aaron Rodgers will re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers to once again be the club's starting quarterback and to play under head coach Mike McCarthy for the second time in their careers.

Of course, McCarthy was first Rodgers' head coach when they were with the Green Bay Packers from 2006 through much of the 2018 season. During a Monday appearance on Pittsburgh sports radio station 93.7 The Fan, NFL insider Tyler Dunne of Go Long shared what he has learned from a source familiar with Rodgers and McCarthy about a reunion that could become disastrous for the Steelers.

Will Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy soon "be at each other’s throats and fighting" with the Steelers?

"They’ll be at each other’s throats and fighting in no time," Dunne said about the source's thoughts on Rodgers and McCarthy possibly working together, per Brendan Howe of Steelers Now. "And he saw this up close, so I’m sure they’ll say all the right things if they are rejoining forces here, and who knows, there will be good times. … But the season is a marathon, look across the AFC, look in your own division. It’s hard to see this ending well for any party involved."

The relationship between McCarthy and Rodgers reportedly soured over their last few seasons together with the Packers. However, the two seemingly made up when McCarthy was serving as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2020-24.

Shortly after the Steelers hired McCarthy this past winter, it was said that his relationship with Rodgers "is better now than it ever was when they were together in Green Bay." Back in March, Rodgers insisted that he has "so much love for Mike and appreciation for the time we spent together."

Dunne sounds convinced that it won't take long for Rodgers and McCarthy to get sick of each other in Pittsburgh.

One reason Aaron Rodgers may play nice with Mike McCarthy

"I think you put it mildly. The friction, the tension, that’s probably being nice," Dunne added during his comments about Rodgers and McCarthy. "It was bad. We’re talking seven, seven and a half years ago, so it’s been a while. As time passes, maybe the heart grows fonder. The analogies that we’ve kicked around at Go Long, it’s middle-aged man on Facebook, looking up the old high school flame, out of options, not really sure where to turn."

Dunne was referencing how there doesn't seem to be any other team that is all that interested in signing Rodgers this spring. While the 42-year-old could always ride off into the sunset of retirement, multiple insiders mentioned on Monday that Rodgers may re-sign with Pittsburgh in time to report for the start of OTAs next Monday (May 18).
