Insider proposes Cowboys trade for former All-Pro to 'boost' offense

The Dallas Cowboys need to upgrade their roster to strengthen their Super Bowl chances. Acquiring Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry will do that.

The Titans appear to be in sell mode after they dealt safety Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday. Jon Machota of The Athletic listed Henry as a potential trade target for the Cowboys.

"The Cowboys went into the season feeling comfortable with Tony Pollard officially taking over the lead running back role," wrote Machota. "And though he remains one of Dallas' most important offensive assets, the running game could use a boost. Henry would provide that with his physical running style."

Pollard has regressed slightly this season. Through six games, the 26-year-old has averaged a career-low 3.9 yards per carry and scored only two TDs. Dallas should acquire a power back to reduce Pollard's workload so he doesn't break down.

Henry, a three-time Pro Bowler, is 10th in the NFL in rushing yards (425 yards on 98 carries). Also, he suits the Dallas offense since head coach Mike McCarthy emphasizes a potent ground attack.

"Considering how Mike McCarthy wants to play, Henry would make some sense," wrote Machota. "And it would come as no surprise to see him traded."

Henry is entering the final year of a four-year, $50M deal, which may detract the Cowboys. They can't afford to hand out large contract extensions next offseason. Spotrac projects the franchise will be $11.69M over the cap in 2024.

On Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told KRLD-FM in Dallas, "I'm not thinking in any way we need to upgrade our roster."

However, it's clear Dallas isn't the best team in the NFC. Per OddsChecker, the San Francisco 49ers (+550) and Eagles (+600) have better Super Bowl odds than the Cowboys (+1100).

The Cowboys should seriously consider trading for an elite player like Henry before the deadline on Oct. 31. Even if he plays only one season for Dallas, he will help it catapult its rivals and make a deep playoff run.
