FRISCO, Texas - It is the proverbial elephant in the … locker room.
The Dallas Cowboys put forth what some observers are calling their most disappointing playoff performance ever on Sunday, getting blown out 48-32 at home by the underdog Green Bay Packers.
And now some observers are calling for the head of coach Mike McCarthy.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated that he would be meeting with the coach on Monday on this topic and many more, adding sadly that he has “too much experience” having to reevaluate following playoff losses.
And indeed, it has been 29 years since a But Dallas appearance in an NFC title game or a Super Bowl. That’s a lot of reevaluating.
Meanwhile, the head coach - who to his credit has overseen three straight seasons of 12-5 finishes with playoff berths, is not presently interested in talking about his job security.
McCarthy avoided answering a Sunday night question about his job security future.
“I think the biggest thing is, we’re disappointed,” McCarthy said. “I got a whole team in the locker room that’s hurting. I haven’t thought past the outcome of this game.”
Jones also suggested that as of Sunday, he’d not thought of anything but the game as well.
McCarthy has one year remaining on his contract. A few days ago, there was talk of an extension.
And now?
Said McCarthy said. “We’re hurting, we’re disappointed, every man.”
And now? Attention turns to that “elephant” … and whether Jerry Jones allows him to remain in the “room.”.
