Is Darren Mougey the NY Jets’ Leon Rose?

The current headlining story in sports is the New York Knicks’ incredible playoff run. After winning 13 straight postseason games and the first two games of the NBA Finals, New York will head to Madison Square Garden with a commanding lead in the series.

Our Michael Nania drew a cross-sport comparison between the Jets and Knicks, breaking down just how many pieces Gang Green may still need to reach the level of contention the Knicks have reached.

While the Jets are still missing many of those pieces, there is a chance they have the engine that pushed the Knicks to this point: a strong front office.

Do the Jets have their Leon Rose in Darren Mougey?

Leon Rose is one of the main reasons the Knicks are currently in the Finals. Since being hired as the Knicks’ President of Basketball Operations in 2020, he has done a terrific job reshaping the organization’s roster into one of the best in the league.

Most importantly, though, he hasn’t shied away from making bold moves in multiple regards.

Signing Jalen Brunson to a four-year, $104 million contract in 2022 was widely viewed as a significant overpay by both a large portion of the national media and the Knicks’ fanbase. Now, four years later, Rose is licking his chops.

Another example is the Mikal Bridges trade in the summer of 2024, in which Rose sent four unprotected first-round picks to the Brooklyn Nets, along with Bojan Bogdanovic, a protected first-rounder, an unprotected first-round pick swap, and a second-round pick… all just for Bridges.

Sean Marks and the Nets got tremendous value in exchange for Bridges, who simply didn’t match their timeline. It’s a deal that has been chastised during the lowest moments of Bridges’ Knicks career. But now it is clear that if Rose hadn’t made that trade, the Knicks most likely wouldn’t be in the NBA Finals.

There are so many more aggressive, yet fantastic decisions Rose has made since being hired that have shaped where the Knicks are now, including the Josh Hart trade, the OG Anunoby trade, and the Karl-Anthony Towns trade, just to name a few.

The Knicks also did an excellent job of filling out the back end of their roster with players like Miles McBride, Landry Shamet, and Jose Alvarado, while wisely extending Mitchell Robinson.

It’s no understatement to credit Rose with “saving” the Knicks’ franchise.

Now, across the Hudson, the Jets are hoping they have their version of Rose in Darren Mougey.

While Mougey won just three games in his first season as the Jets’ general manager, context is everything. Mougey inherited a complete mess after the Aaron Rodgers era. Through two offseasons, he has beautifully executed trades of several varieties to set the organization up for a bright future.

Over 13 trades, he has acquired players like Jowon Briggs, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and Harrison Phillips, all in exchange for Day 3 draft picks. He also got excellent value in exchange for Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner, trading them at the NFL trade deadline and acquiring a grand total of three first-round picks, a second-round pick, Adonai Mitchell, and Mazi Smith in return.

To boot, he has displayed a sound process on the free agent market, signing starters like Demario Davis and Dylan Parham, alongside revamping the Jets’ defensive line this offseason. While adding a large quantity of players who can upgrade the Jets’ roster, Mougey has avoided any overpays that will hamstring the Jets’ future.

Fans should be extremely optimistic about Mougey’s future.

However, just as Rose landed his franchise-changer in Jalen Brunson, Mougey must do the same at quarterback, and if he is unable to do so, he will be labeled just another failed Jets GM.
