New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen have insisted throughout the spring that veteran Russell Wilson will be the team's Week 1 starting quarterback.
Nevertheless, some believe Daboll could turn to rookie Jaxson Dart after just a handful of regular-season games.
While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Wilson touched upon whether he feels he could be playing for his job from Week 1 through Week 4 of the upcoming campaign.
"I just think about having success today," Wilson said, per Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "That’s always been my approach. I’m trying to be the best in the world. I think that for me, mentally, you have confidence in yourself and you have confidence in what you do, your process. I constantly stay the course and understand that if I’m the best me, I know how great that is. I always just stay within. I don’t really think about outside."
Throughout the voluntary portion of the offseason program, Giants players have noted how both Wilson and backup Jameis Winston have been excellent teachers for younger members of the locker room such as Dart. That said, Schoen made Dart a first-round pick because it's hoped the former Ole Miss star can become Big Blue's long-term answer at the sport's most important position.
Veteran Joe Flacco has generated headlines and attracted criticism for repeatedly making it known this spring he cares more about winning the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback job than about mentoring teammates Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. On Thursday, Wilson noted that he's happy to share knowledge with Dart during meetings and on the practice field.
"I’m a big believer in communicating out loud: 'Here’s what I’m thinking.' You don’t hold any information [back]," Wilson added. "For me, when you have tremendous confidence in yourself, you have no problem sharing with others. That’s just what I’ve always believed."
The Giants open the season with games at the Washington Commanders and at the Dallas Cowboys before New York welcomes the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers for matchups held at MetLife Stadium. How Wilson plays in those four contests could determine if he's still in the lineup when the Giants face the New Orleans Saints at Caesars Superdome on Oct. 5.
