Is this the week the offense takes off for the Minnesota Vikings (5-0)? It certainly has a chance to show significant improvement as a number of injured players appear to be healthy enough to play.
The most important player may be running back Jordan Mason. As the season got underway, head coach Kevin O’Connell was fairly confident that the RB combination of Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason would be good enough to support new quarterback Kyler Murray.
That theory still holds, but the Vikings have not had a chance to prove it yet because Mason suffered a thumb injury in Week 1 and has been out since. Jones has been impressive in recent weeks, running for 94 yards against the Dolphins and 113 yards against the Saints.
Mason appears to be healthy enough to return this week against the Indianapolis Colts. He was a full participant in practice and O’Connell had started talking about Mason’s return in the locker room after the Saints game.
Mason is a solid running back with the power to run between the tackles and initiate contact and keep churning out the yards. He led the Vikings with 758 yards and a 4.8 yards per carry average last year with 6 touchdowns. The Vikings are hoping for similar production again this year.
It is supposed to begin Sunday against the Colts unless there are any late setbacks prior to the game during warmups.
In addition to Mason, the Vikings are also looking forward to the probable return of OLT Christian Darrisaw, WR Jordan Addison and TE T.J. Hockenson.
If all of those players are able to return and make a contribution against a troubled Colts (2-4) team, the Vikings should be able to extend their undefeated record.
