Is Michael Penix Jr. a franchise quarterback?

In his 17th career NFL start against the San Francisco 49ers, Michael Penix Jr., was distributing the football with precision. He threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns.

For all the talk about explosive plays, Atlanta's offense carved up San Francisco in Week 7 with patience and precision. Going into the fourth quarter, Penix had thrown 20 of his 29 passes for five air yards or less, embracing a methodical approach that kept the offense on schedule.

"Michael Penix Jr. is going a very long way in making life very, very easy for those in the Atlanta Falcons organization," NFL national insider Ian Rapoport said, via Tori McElhaney of the team website, "knowing they have a guy at quarterback."

The Falcons spent six years searching for certainty at quarterback after Matt Ryan retired following the 2021 regular season. What Penix has done in his first stretch as a starter is give the organization something every contender craves: peace of mind. When a franchise knows it has its quarterback, every other decision becomes easier.

Atlanta hired Ryan on Jan. 10, 2026 because they believe the qualities that made him successful on the field can help reshape the organization from the front office. As the team's President of Football, Ryan oversees all football operations, including the head coach and general manager, both of whom report directly to him. He also works alongside team president and CEO Greg Beadles while reporting to owner Arthur Blank.

The Falcons weren't looking for a ceremonial franchise ambassador when they hired Ryan. They wanted a leader who could restore accountability and direction to an organization that has spent years searching for both. In Atlanta's eyes, Ryan isn't just a franchise legend. He's the person entrusted with bringing the franchise back to relevance.

Since returning to the starting lineup in Week 3, Penix Jr. has helped transform Atlanta's offense into the league's highest-scoring unit at 31.0 points per game. He's also posted top-10 marks in passer rating (109.1) and completion percentage (66.7%).

“When No. 9 is out there, this is a completely different football team,” Atlanta safety Jessie Bates said, via Josh Kendall of The Athletic. “I really, truly believe he’s a franchise quarterback. …You can sleep good at night as a defensive guy when you have Michael Penix playing quarterback for you.”
