Is Romeo Doubs a Midseason Trade Candidate for Packers?

General Manager Brian Gutekunst has constructed a roster that has left Green Bay Packers’ fans gleaming with joy.

The Packers have jumped out to a fantastic 2-0 start with notable victories over the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders. A late-August trade for edge rusher Micah Parsons has yielded immediate results, putting together two dominant performances alongside the rest of the Green Bay defense.

Is it possible that Gutekunst will be active in the NFL trade market as the season progresses?

The acquisition of Parsons places the Packers in a position where they must consider additional personnel moves. The trade and subsequent extension of Parsons cost the Packers two first-round draft picks and pushed the team over the 2026 NFL salary cap.

To recoup some draft capital for the future and navigate future salary cap restrictions, the Packers might benefit from moving on from fourth-year wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

Why Romeo?

The Packers are carrying seven wide receivers under contract in 2025. Five of those receivers will remain under contract for the 2026 season, with Doubs and role player Malik Heath playing on expiring contracts. The presence of Matthew Golden, Christian Watson, and Jayden Reed on the 2026 roster make Doubs more of a luxury than a necessity.

A crowded wide receiver room and the 2026 salary cap are enough to generate questions regarding Doubs’ future in Wisconsin. Unfortunately, the justification to trade the veteran receiver doesn’t end there. Doubs sustained two concussions and the Packers suspended him for conduct detrimental to the team in 2024. Gutekunst may struggle to justify the hoops he would need to jump through to retain Doubs.

Near Perfect Timing

Injuries to Jayden Reed and Christian Watson may suggest that the team is not in a position to trade a receiver. Reed is expected to be out until early November after sustaining a broken collar bone in week two against the Commanders. Watson is expected back to the lineup no earlier than Week 5 after a late 2024 ACL tear. The absence of Reed and Watson present the perfect opportunity for Doubs to demonstrate his value to potential suitors.

Doubs will continue to play a critical role in the Packers’ offense after leading his peers in total snaps played through two weeks. The 2025 NFL trade deadline is scheduled for Nov. 4 and projects to align with the return of Reed and Watson. A strong performance by Doubs in the coming weeks could position Gutekunst to trade the receiver for draft pick compensation.

Compensation

Gutekunst knows that Doubs provides tangible value to a Packers team that has Super Bowl aspirations. He also knows that retaining Doubs beyond this season may not be feasible. A midseason move allows the Packers to receive compensation for his departure, rather than watching him leave in free agency for nothing.

A trade for Romeo Doubs would require adequate compensation for the price of potentially disrupting the Packers’ offensive chemistry. That doesn’t mean that the package isn’t out there on the market. Gutekunst might struggle to turn down a team offering fourth-round pick.

Either way, Gutekunst has earned the trust of the Packers’ community.
