Russell Wilson‘s time as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants did not get off to the best start. The former Seattle Seahawks QB went 17-of-37 and threw for 168 yards in the Giants’ 21-6 defeat to the Washington Commanders.
His completion percentage of 45.9% was the worst of his career when he had made at least 35 passing attempts.
For those who have been following Wilson’s career since he left the Seahawks in 2021, this is not a surprise. Wilson has struggled to live up to his former reputation, and his days as one of the best quarterbacks in the league are in the past.
This was something that Giants coach Brian Daboll should have been aware of when he brought Wilson to the team to essentially serve as a “bridge quarterback” before Jaxson Dart takes over the role.
The team hoped that Wilson would be able to provide a boost for an offense that has been struggling for years. But, instead of this, fans saw the same dismal performance that we have become used to.
To potentially make things worse for the team, former quarterback Daniel Jones (who infamously struggled for six years with the Giants and was seen as a reason why the offense struggled) played one of the best games of his career with the Indianapolis Colts. While this was against a Miami Dolphins side that struggled on both sides of the ball (and we cannot read much into the first game of the season), it shows that Jones can perform and lead a team to success.
After the lacklustre performance from Wilson on Sunday, there are fans already calling for Jaxson Dart to take over the starting quarterback role.
When asked if he is going to make any changes to the quarterback position for next week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, Giants coach Brian Daboll said the following after the defeat to the Commanders:
“I got confidence in Ru — we got to do better around overall. Coaches, players, around everybody.”
He backed this up on Monday by clearly stating that Wilson will be the starter.
But, for how long will Daboll feel like this?
If Wilson’s performance from the Commanders’ game is not an exception but the norm, the calls to bench the former Super Bowl winner for Jaxson Dart will only grow.
With Daboll coming into the season already on the proverbial hot seat, he cannot afford another uncompetitive season. Replacing Wilson with Dart sooner rather than later, potentially bringing an end to his career, may be needed to save his job and the Giants’ season.
