'It Hurt Me': Patrick Mahomes Gets Honest About Relationship With His Father

Back in 2024, Patrick Mahomes learned that his father was arrested just days before the Kansas City Chiefs took on the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. Although it's been well over a year, he finally opened up about this situation.

Patrick Mahomes Sr. was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated for the third time. He pleaded guilty later that year in Smith County, Texas. Despite his antics causing a distraction for the Chiefs, his son still led the franchise to a 25-22 victory in the Super Bowl.

In just a few days, ESPN's latest project, "The Kingdom," will finally be released. Believe it or not, Mahomes talked about his father's arrest during this six-episode docuseries.

According to the New York Post, Mahomes revealed that he was "hurt" by his father's decisions leading up to Super Bowl LVIII.

"It was during that Super Bowl week. It became a story and so I had to answer questions about it," Mahomes said. "I think just knowing that it hurt me, woke him up to know that like you can’t keep doing the same things."

Mahomes' father also opened up about this situation in ESPN's new docuseries.

"It kind of hit home before the Super Bowl last year, when I got in trouble. For him to have to answer questions about me, you know, was probably the most embarrassing thing that I’ve ever been through in my life," Mahomes Sr. said, via the New York Post. "I called him right after … I said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry that it’s taken away from your time and focus.’ … I made a vow that he would never have to deal with anything because of drinking because of me. I haven’t had a drink since then."

ESPN's "The Kingdom" will premiere on Aug. 14 at 9 p.m. ET. All six episodes will be available on ESPN+ and Disney+.
