It sounds like the Vikings already have one of their position groups locked up
Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Vikings have several areas of the roster to figure out over the coming weeks and months, but the tight end room already appears to be set.

It was already crowded enough with T.J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver, and Johnny Mundt leading the way - and this is including the reality Hockenson could start the season on the physically unable to perform list.

It became even more crowded after another body was added last week. Veteran Robert Tonyan, who's now played for all four NFC North teams throughout his career, is the new guy in town. He's played in 85 games and started 24 of those, recording 148 receptions for 1,549 yards and 17 touchdowns off 193 targets.

He's not just a camp body or even a special-teamer. He's a player that can contribute and that's exactly what the coaching staff sees.

"Robert Tonyan had a great workout for us... it was kind of one of those workouts where you just watch the guy run and catch and [he] understands what you're asking him to do from his experience. And it was kind of a no-brainer - everyone just looked around and said, Yea. You know, like, Let's get him," Vikings offensive coordinator Wes Phillips told reporters Tuesday.

"So, I think he's really going to help us and obviously, with TJ being out, I think Robert can kind of fill some of those some of those roles that TJ did for us. [There's] a lot of production from TJ that we're gonna miss, for a little bit. And I think he can pick up a good amount of that slack."

There's speculation, indeed, that Hockenson could start the year on the PUP list, which only adds more logic to the addition of Tonyan. Behind him is Nick Muse, rookie undrafted free agent Trey Knox, and International Pathway Program player, Sammis Reyes. It's more unlikely than likely that Minnesota carries four TEs on the roster if Hockenson starts the year on PUP, but that's without accounting for one of the aforementioned three players having a breakout OTAs/camp/preseason.

If that happens, there's certainly a world where the Vikings carry four tight ends with Hock on PUP, just so they could really take their time easing him back in.

Regardless, it appears this position group is set when listening to Phillips talk about Tonyan. Sure, we've seen coaches laud players just to cut them down the road, before, but it doesn't happen as often when coaches talk the way Phillips did on Tuesday. Unless Tonyan simply can't get the job done, it sounds like it's his job to lose and the Vikings tight end room also just got a lot deeper.
