There are always battles between positions that help influence who wins a game, and on Sunday, it's no secret who the Washington Commanders have to erase from the equation to walk away with a win.
Adam Peters knew exactly what he needed to do in the offseason, and he invested a lot of draft capital into a very important position to help project the franchise quarterback, Jayden Daniels. He traded for Laremy Tunsil, who is a top-five left tackle in the league, and drafted rookie Josh Conerly Jr. with the 29th overall pick. We will quickly see exactly how much it paid off.
It will be all hands on deck for the offensive line as they face one of the toughest matchups of the season right out of the gate against a New York Giants defensive line that can completely change the game.
It's no secret how good the Giants' defensive line is, and keeping Daniels upright is the single most important factor on Sunday. The Commanders might struggle to run the ball in Week 1 with a new running back committee taking the field, so a lot of the offensive production will fall on Daniels.
Of course, the spotlight is never too big for Daniels, and he has his favorite weapon, Terry McLaurin back, and a new target in Deebo Samuel, but it won't matter if he has pressure in his face all game. Daniels knows how lethal the defensive line can be, and he gave his thoughts on what he expects.
"A defense that flies around," Daniels told the media. "Week one, everybody's going to be juiced up, everybody's healthy, so they're just going to go out there. It's going to be a battle.”

Daniels will be the one on the field having to worry about the defensive line trying to get at him with a target on his back, but offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is the guy preparing for the challenge and making sure they aren't a factor.
"Yeah, it's as good as we'll see," Kingsbury said. "With those guys, they've invested a lot in that group and rightfully so, and they're very good. I think [Dexter] Lawrence is one of the premier defensive players in the league. There's no doubt. I mean, he's a game wrecker if you don't have a plan for him each and every snap."
Dexter Lawrence is clearly one of, if not the best, defensive tackle in the NFL, and he's the real staple of the Giants' defensive line. Lawrence was voted the 17th best player in the league on the NFL top-100 list, and he was actually the most double-teamed defensive tackle in the NFL since 2018. It didn't matter, though; he was still dominant.
Dexter Lawrence is the best NT in the #NFL — and it’s not close.

Despite missing the final 5 games of 24', he racked up 9 sacks while facing a 74.5% double-team rate, the highest in the league. Over the last 3 years, he has 96 pressures — no other NT has more than 20. #Giants pic.twitter.com/wxzvIeEVP4
Lawrence isn't the only player the offense has to worry about, as the Giants have spent a lot of capital on the line, including the 3rd overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft on Abdul Carter.
"I’ve always had a tremendous amount of respect for [Brian] Burns and his style of play and kind of
the relentless effort he plays with," Kingsbury added. "And then [Kayvon] Thibodeaux, a top pick, and Abdul [Carter] now. So, the front seven is as challenging as we'll face. We're going to have to be prepared and know it's going to be a knockdown, drag-out type game, just like they were last year. It came down to the wire in both games last year, and our team understands that.”
The Commanders' offensive line is much improved with Tunsil and Conerly Jr. protecting the edges for Daniels, and the whole front five will need to play four quarters of flawless football to leave Week 1 with a 1-0 record.
