Jacksonville Jaguars general manager James Gladstone sends subtle shots at the previous regime

The Jacksonville Jaguars are tired of being a franchise that people walk over and make fun of. They are ready to make that switch to becoming one of the more respected franchises in the league, but it won't happen overnight, and it certainly won't happen quickly. The new regime, head coach Liam Coen, and general manager James Gladstone are ready to take on the challenge.

But first, before they can really do anything, they must first address what needs to be changed and what doesn't. They must find the bad, or the cancer, and remove it so it doesn't spread. Last year, the offense wasn't as elite as it maybe could have been, but it was better than it was the year before. The biggest issue was the defense, in that teams did whatever they wanted to do on offense against the Jaguars.

And, this new regime knows that the defense was a major issue in 2024, and they are already addressing it. The thing is, it's not really a roster issue. Are there holes that need to be filled and issues that need to be addressed? Yes. But, this roster is a fairly good one on that side of the ball. This was much more of a coaching issue.

Gladstone knows that, so much so that he pretty much just outright said it, subtly sending shots at former DC Ryan Nielsen and even Doug Pederson, as he was the head coach and oversaw everything.

“We'll be an urgent and explosive bunch on defense. It'll certainly be a shift from what our fans probably saw last year," Gladstone said at the NFL Combine on Tuesday.

And, while he's not wrong, calling out the people who were there before you is not something I had on my bingo card. But let's get one thing straight -- Gladstone may look very young, and he may look like a dude who is a few years from being able to drink alcohol, but the kid knows what he's talking about, and he hates that the team was the way it was last year.

Gladstone didn't put this stuff in place, Coen did, but you better believe that he will make changes over the next few years where he sees fit. He constantly had to help with replacing staff when he was with the Los Angeles Rams, and that is largely because they always had other teams stealing their staff members for promotions.

But, Gladstone is not in over his head, and he's not sending subtle shots because he wants to seem like a jerk. He just cares, and he wants everything done the right way. And, hey, who doesn't love a guy who's competitive like that?
