Jacksonville Jaguars have a legit chance to turn one of the worst position groups in the league into an elite unit

Heading into the 2025 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars are not necessarily expected to have a top defensive unit in the league. That doesn't mean it's not possible, but the expectations aren't there. And, it's hard to have those expectations when you have the big discrepancies they have at certain position groups.

It's no secret the Jaguars' best position group on defense is the edge rusher group. Headlined by Joshua Hines-Allen and Travon Walker, the Jaguars are set to have a dynamic duo off the egde again. Next would be the cornerback room, where they could have two very good players at the position in Tyson Campbell and Travis Hunter, the dynamic do-it-all rookie.

If you ask what the worst position group is, it's very easy to say the safety unit, which is currently held down by former Houston Texans safety Eric Murray and former Green Bay Packers safety Darnell Savage. Behind them are some really young guys. You can argue that they aren't the worst in the league there, but you cannot argue that the unit is one of the best in the league.

Weakest: Jacksonville Jaguars Jacksonville carried the league’s lowest-graded safety unit in 2024 and lost arguably the best player, Andre Cisco, from that group via free agency. Darnell Savage and Antonio Johnson remain as options, though both graded poorly last season. Veteran Eric Murray was brought in from Houston, but he hasn’t graded above 65.1 in any of the past six seasons. The team may view third-round pick Caleb Ransaw as a potential future starter, but he played mostly in the slot at Tulane. - PFF

With their young guys they have in the building, the guys they have drafted the last two years, and from the 2025 NFL Draft, this unit could turn into an elite one. Guys like Antonio Johnson, who had two interceptions in his rookie year along with a few pass deflections, are someone who can really develop into a big-time player.

Then there are the rookies they just drafted, like Tulane safety Caleb Ransaw and Rayuan Lane, two guys who certainly have some potential, especially Ransaw.

Yes, right now, they may have the worst unit, but they could turn into an elite one over the next few years with what they have been able to do at the position through the draft.
