The Arizona Cardinals and quarterback Jacoby Brissett do not appear close to resolving their contract situation, creating uncertainty around the team’s offseason plans as organized team activities continue.
Brissett has reportedly stayed away from voluntary workouts while seeking a reworked contract for the 2026 season, and sources indicate the two sides remain “significantly” apart in negotiations.
Brissett signed a two-year deal in March 2025 that currently pays him $4.88 million for 2026, with only $1.5 million guaranteed and a maximum value of $5.39 million. The financial structure has become a point of contention after Arizona informed him earlier this offseason that he is expected to be the team’s starting quarterback.
The contract discrepancy becomes more noticeable when compared with veteran addition Gardner Minshew II, who received $5.14 million in guaranteed money after joining Arizona this offseason.
Brissett’s camp appears to be arguing that his role and production warrant a stronger financial commitment.
After taking over when Kyler Murray suffered an injury last season, Brissett started 12 games and posted some of the most productive numbers of his career.
He completed 64.9% of his passes for a career-high 3,366 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His play elevated several offensive weapons, including Trey McBride and Michael Wilson.
The problem with Brissett’s leverage is Arizona’s record. Despite his improved numbers, the Cardinals finished 3-14 and went just 1-11 in his starts.
Arizona has prepared for multiple scenarios this offseason. The team added Minshew in free agency and selected Carson Beck in the third round of the draft, giving new coach Mike LaFleur additional options.
Brissett remains viewed internally as the projected starter, but his continued absence could complicate his transition into LaFleur’s system while giving Minshew and Beck more opportunities for reps.
Mandatory minicamp from June 8–10 now becomes the next major checkpoint in these negotiations. If the standoff continues beyond voluntary activities, the pressure on both sides could increase quickly.
