Jacoby Brissett to be backup QB with Dolphins?

Quarterback Jacoby Brissett is making a move to a different team but reportedly will have a similar role to the one he held while with the Indianapolis Colts.

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero (h/t Jelani Scott), Brissett has agreed to a one-year deal worth $5 million to join the Miami Dolphins and serve as the backup and mentor for 2020 rookie Tua Tagovailoa. Dolphins coach Brian Flores recently opened the door for veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick to return to Miami, but that possibility was taken off the table once Fitzpatrick agreed to join the Washington Football Team.

Fitzpatrick replaced Tagovailoa on multiple occasions last season and compiled a 4-3 record as a starter. Miami was previously linked with disgruntled Houston Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson in trade rumors, but Pelissero's latest update suggests the club is committed to seeing what Tagovailoa can or cannot do in his second NFL season.

In Brissett, the Dolphins have a proven starting option who will be on his third pro team and who can fill in if Tagovailoa either goes down to injury or underwhelms so much that he's relegated to the bench for a quarter, a half, or longer.
