Travis Hunter enters the training camp as the most anticipated rookie in the league. The Jacksonville Jaguars' first-round pick has the NFL world making speculations about his two-way potential.
The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner has kept both offensive and defensive duties throughout his career and is set to play both wide receiver and cornerback in the NFL. The rare talent has raised questions about the workload.
Hunter has shown that he can handle the responsibilities. In his last season with the Buffaloes, he charted 96 passes for 1,258 yards, 15 touchdowns, and four interceptions. However, experts and veterans are concerned about whether it would be possible in the NFL, where elites take the field.
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen addressed the media following the first day of training camp. He was unsurprisingly asked about Hunter's routine entering training camp and how it differs from his routine in the offseason.
"It evolved a little bit from the offseason program," he said. "We saw there was a span where maybe he practiced on offense, let's call it a Thursday, because we didn't do anything on the Fridays and then he had Friday, Saturday, Sunday and then Monday he was on defense. That's like four days without doing anything on offense."
"We learned that was too long to go without doing anything on the other side of the ball.... But every single day that he is on one side of the ball, he will meet with the other side of the ball at least once, maybe twice as well."
The coaching staff wants Hunter to work on both sides of the ball every day. It will be difficult for them to keep the rookie in shape. They have not yet clarified how they will use the 22-year-old, tagging it a situation-based decision.
Hunter has inked a four-year, $46.65 million contract with the Jaguars with a fifth-year team option, which Jacksonville can exercise in the spring of 2028. He is the first non-quarterback not drafted first overall to receive his entire signing bonus upfront.
The Jaguars traded up to land Hunter, parting ways with significant draft capital in the process. They'll hope for him to combine with Lawrence and take the team to glory.
