Jaguars Hold Breath After Top Receiver's Injury Scare

Preseason injuries can impact an NFL team’s prospects as much as a key free agent signing, a new head coach, or a talented draft pick.

It’s just the wrong kind of impact.

Fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars endured a 4-13 campaign in 2024. They don’t need one of last season’s few bright spots to wink out before the 2025 schedule even gets underway.

On Wednesday, fans at Miller Electric Center got a scare when second-year wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr limped off the practice field with trainers. Thomas collided with cornerback Tyson Campbell on a play and appeared shaken up.

Thomas walked off the field on his own power, but did not return to practice. Fortunately, the Jaguars’ star pass-catcher suffered only a bruised shoulder.

“He’s fine,” first-year Jaguars head coach Liam Coen told reporters after the practice wrapped. “He could have gone back (in) and played. He’s just bruised a little bit.”

As a rookie in 2024, Thomas caught 82 passes for 1282 yards and 10 touchdowns, including an 85-yard score. The NFL Rookie of the Year finalist expects to take on more leadership responsibilities in 2025. He told his coaches he felt fine.

“(Thomas) said he had great range of motion,” Coen said. “He’s all good.”

Travis Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner from Colorado and the team’s number one draft pick, said he’s been learning from Thomas on both sides of the ball.

“(Thomas) is very smooth, no (predictable) tendencies,” said Hunter, who expects to play at both wide receiver and cornerback for Jacksonville. “He’s got great hands.”

Wednesday’s minicamp practice was open to fans. Their reports of Thomas’ possible injury sent a brief ripple across social media.

“The Jags can’t catch a break,” WeeBay Wally posted to X on Wednesday.

One X user saw the silver lining of a better defense in Thomas’ brief scare, posting “Tlaw (Tyson Campbell) in midseason form already.”

Meanwhile, one poster on X summed up what most Jaguar fans had to be feeling Wednesday morning:

“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” posted NygDom.

Fortunately, by all accounts, Thomas appears to have only been shaken up. Mandatory minicamp will wrap up with a lighter workout on Thursday.
