Jahmyr Gibbs is on his way from being a middle-draft value pick to one of the top running backs in Fantasy Football. Many players might remember the end of last season when David Montgomery was injured and Gibbs put on a running clinic. Looking at the stats, though, Gibbs was having a great season even with Montgomery healthy. He only has two seasons behind him after he was drafted from Alabama, making him valuable in both redraft and dynasty leagues.
Gibbs has one of the highest floors out of any of the running backs in the league. In 2024, he never scored below double-digit fantasy points. His worst game on the ground was against Buffalo, where he rushed for 31 yards (fortunately, he made up for that by having 83 yards via pass catching).
His best game did occur in the last week of the season with Montgomery injured (he scored 46 fantasy points that week), but he also dropped 32 points on Minnesota earlier in the season with a healthy Montgomery. What the numbers show is that Gibbs is an amazing running back when he is the sole back, but he’s also pretty great while sharing touches with his fellow Lion.
The general consensus amongst fantasy football experts right now is that Bijan Robinson and Saquon Barkley will be fighting for those first two spots, and Jahmyr Gibbs should be the de facto third running back taken. Third is where he’s ranked on Fantasy Pros. While David Montgomery will be back in full force for the upcoming season, Gibbs should still be projected to perform around RB3 on the year.
That being said, there’s no rule saying that he absolutely needs to be the third running back taken. That’s because there’s a certain player by the name of Derrick Henry ranked behind him. Arguably, Henry could be the first running back taken in any draft, and it wouldn’t be considered a mistake. There are also plenty of experts who have high hopes for Ashton Jeanty, and with good reason. These players should end up with similar production by the end of the season, so it does come down to personal preference as to who to draft in which order.
