Jahmyr Gibbs Contract Extension: Did Detroit Make a Mistake?

Detroit Lions Extend Superstar Running Back Jahmyr Gibbs

The Detroit Lions went out and gave Jahmyr Gibbs a record breaking contract extension that now makes him the highest paid running back in the entire NFL. The initial terms of the extension are a three-year $67.5 million deal that could be worth up to $75.75 million, including $51.5 million in guarantees.

Looking at the 24 year old running back who is coming off of back-to-back 1,900 and 1,800 yard seasons from scrimmage, it was time that Detroit rewarded the superstar. The Lions obviously lost their elite offensive mind in Ben Johnson, but it is crucial that they keep their elite offensive weapons of Gibbs, Amon-Ra St Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam Laporta, and even Isaac TeSlaa all together.

The question now becomes if this contract extension was worth it for Detroit, and undoubtedly you can't just let a star player like Gibbs walk for nothing. The Lions have locked up most of their stars except for two key cogs who become free agents in 2027 with Sam Laporta and Brian Branch.

One of the most intruiging parts of the Lions upcoming season will be the loss of David Montgomery replaced by Isiah Pacheco. Montgomery will be an excellent running back for the Texans, but Pacheco should be an excellent change of pace back to Gibbs's superstar.
