General manager Brad Holmes and the Detroit Lions have been busy drafting new talent and working out extensions for existing players amid the NFL offseason.
On Thursday, news broke that the Lions extended linebacker Jack Campbell's contract with a four-year, $81 million extension, including $51.5 million guaranteed, keeping him under contract with the team until 2030.
Lions want to get a Jahmyr Gibbs deal done soon, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter.
According to Schefter, Detroit wants to extend Gibbs' deal before training camp starts this summer. During an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," Schefter strongly pointed to this summer as when the deal will get done.
"Yeah, I think this is a whole work-in-progress, because there are a lot of players that have to get paid there. Jahmyr Gibbs, I would think would be next," Schefter said on the show. "A deal at some point this summer for Gibbs, (Atlanta Falcons RB) Bijan Robinson. Those are gonna be big, blockbuster deals."
He also said the same of Sam LaPorta, their tight end, but didn't pinpoint a timeline.
He added: "They get Jack Campbell out of the way, and I think, these are the challenges that are there for this franchise that has been so close in recent years, and now, it's going to be harder, because they've got to pay these guys who are on rookie contracts, the money that they deserve, and that creates less flexibility elsewhere on the roster. Still a good team, but boy, they had a real window here the last few years, and unfortunately for them, they didn't get to take advantage of it. But they're going to still be one of the top teams in the league."
Schefter makes the unfortunate point that the Lions' window may have closed, but the good news is that they still have talented players. That's why it's so important to get Gibbs inked this summer, and it sounds as if Holmes is moving in that direction.
