Jaire Alexander shut the door on Commanders before it even opened

It didn't take long for the Washington Commanders to be linked with a move for Jaire Alexander after the Green Bay Packers released the veteran cornerback. As it turned out, he already had a preferred destination in mind.

The Commanders never showed any legitimate interest in Alexander despite the calls from some sections of the fan base. Washington is content with the five cornerback options atop the depth chart, all of which are capable of logging starting reps and performing well. Adding the two-time Pro Bowler would have been nice, but it's not the end of the world.

Alexander found a new home quickly, as expected. The former Louisville standout opted to sign a contract with the Baltimore Ravens. This reunites the gifted defensive back with quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was a teammate in college as both became first-round selections.

Commanders never entered the race for Jaire Alexander despite speculation across the media

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Alexander signed a one-year, $4 million deal that could be worth up to $6 million with incentives. The senior insider also revealed that the player turned down more money from elsewhere to join the Ravens. It seems the door was shut for other teams even before it opened.

This gives Alexander a chance to make a lasting contribution to a team that has a good chance of going deep into the postseason once again. The Commanders have similar ambitions, and they've got enough firepower in the cornerback room to meet raised expectations this time around.

Mike Sainristil is a superstar. Marshon Lattimore looks healthy and explosive again, which is like having a new signing. Hopes are high that second-round pick Trey Amos can make an early impression. Jonathan Jones brings experience and proven production. Noah Igbingohene is looking to build on the best campaign of his professional career.

Those plans won't include Alexander. The Commanders weren't interested. Had they been, then the answer would likely have been no, given his preference for the Ravens.

It remains to be seen whether Alexander can stay healthy enough to make a big impact. Baltimore's secondary will be even more formidable if he can, which the Commanders will see first-hand during joint practices with their neighbors this summer.

The Commanders won't regret not throwing their hat into the ring for Alexander. Not if the aforementioned five all perform according to the script when competitive action commences.
