Jake Browning’s Alarming Start to the Season
- Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning (6) fakes a handoff to running back Samaje Perine (34) in the second quarter of the NFL Week 3 game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Cincinnati Bengals at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025.

When Joe Burrow went down with a turf toe injury that required surgery, the Cincinnati Bengals had no choice but to turn to their backup. The keys to the offense were handed to Jake Browning, the man who stepped in admirably last season. But through the first few weeks of the 2025 season, this isn’t the same quarterback who led the Bengals to a 4-3 record in his starts in 2023. A deeply concerning trend has emerged, and it’s putting the team’s chances in jeopardy.

Through less than two full games, Jake Browning has already thrown a league-leading five interceptions on just 59 pass attempts. To put that in perspective, he ranks 30th in the NFL for pass attempts, yet he’s at the very top of the list for picks. This is a red flag you can see from the upper deck of Paycor Stadium.

A Tale of Two Seasons for Jake Browning

The contrast between this season and last is stark. In 2023, Jake Browning was a steady hand, throwing seven interceptions across 243 passes. That interception rate of 2.9% was manageable, respectable even, for a backup thrust into the starting role. Fast forward to 2025, and that number has ballooned to an unsustainable 8.5%. That’s a turnover on nearly one out of every ten throws. No team can consistently win with that kind of statistic hanging over its head.

The trouble started in Week 2. While Browning managed to rally the team to a victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he threw three costly interceptions in relief of Burrow. The win masked the underlying issue, but it was a sign of things to come. In Week 3, there was nowhere to hide. His two interceptions were a significant factor in the Bengals’ complete dismantling by the Minnesota Vikings. The offense couldn’t find a rhythm, and the turnovers handed the Vikings prime opportunities.

What Are the Bengals’ Options at Quarterback?

This alarming turnover rate forces the Bengals’ front office to look at the depth chart and the open market. The team currently has Brett Rypien, Mike White, and Sean Clifford under contract, but are any of them a significant upgrade?

The rumor mill is already churning, with whispers connecting Cincinnati to Russell Wilson, who the New York Giants recently benched. A move for a veteran like Wilson would be a blockbuster, signaling that the Bengals are still all-in on competing this season despite Burrow’s absence. However, acquiring another team’s quarterback mid-season is a complex and often costly maneuver.

For now, the job belongs to Jake Browning. The coaching staff has to hope this is just a rough patch and not the new norm. If he’s going to hold onto the starting position and keep the Bengals’ playoff hopes alive, he has to do one thing above all else: protect the football. The gunslinger mentality is great when it leads to touchdowns, but right now, it’s leading to drive-killing, game-altering mistakes. The pressure is on Jake Browning to prove that the quarterback we saw in 2023 is still in there, and he needs to find him fast.
